of the IATSE’s General Executive Board, held a successful
IATSE-PAC fund raiser on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Mickey Mantle’s
Restaurant.
On Monday, July 28th the General Executive Board unanimously adopted a resolution publicly endorsing Congressman Richard A. Gephardt in his campaign for President of the United States in 2004. Earlier on the day of the fund raiser, the Congressman received a standing ovation and an overwhelmingly supportive reception when he appeared at the Board meeting to address the nearly 250 attendees, representing over 104,000 members throughout the United States and Canada.
“It has never been more important for all members of this
Alliance and all working families across this nation, to support
and elect a U.S. Presidential candidate whose vision for a nation
that is more economically sound, healthier, more educated, and
friendly with our foreign allies. Dick Gephardt is that candidate
and he is the only candidate with the ability to defeat George
W. Bush in 2004,” said IATSE President Thomas C. Short.
President Short continued, “The support of the IATSE will
continue feverishly in the next 17 months and we plan to continue
more fund raising efforts to support Gephardt for President in
2004 and I strongly urge your support”

IATSE Endorses Gephardt
for President July 29, 2003
The General Executive Board of The International Alliance of
Theatrical Stage Employes (IATSE) voted unanimously to support
US Representative Richard Gephardt as their candidate for President
in 2004, it was announced by Thomas C. Short, IATSE International
President. The resolution to endorse the Missouri Democrat was
introduced at the summer, 2003 IATSE Board meeting held in New
York City.
International President Short stated, “Representative Gephardt
has demonstrated through his words and, most importantly, his
actions that he supports working families. He has fought to protect
the rights of unions to organize, bargain and represent their
members. He is working against the privatization of Social Security
and working toward maintaining fair wages and safe working conditions.
His proposed national health care plan shows vision and a real
understanding of the need to stimulate the economy and create
jobs.” Short continued, “We will expend all of our
political resources and energy to elect Dick Gephardt as President
of the United States.”
“I am extremely proud and honored to have received the
support of Tom Short and the members of the International Alliance
of Theatrical Stage Employes,” said Gephardt. “I am
looking forward to working with IATSE to bring quality health
care coverage to all Americans and get our economy moving again.
I plan on going door to door, town to town, union to union to
win the support of hard working Americans all across this country.”
The IATSE is the largest entertainment union in the world, representing
over 104,000 members employed in the stagecraft, motion picture
and television production, and trade show industries throughout
the United States, its Territories and Canada.
